My Experience
Cabo Verde marked the beginning of a big journey across West and Central Africa. I flew into Praia, the capital of this small Portuguese-speaking island nation, and spent the next few days exploring the island of Santiago. Seeing its colorful villages, rugged volcanic landscapes, and dramatic coastal scenery made me feel a world away from mainland Africa.
On my final full day, I squeezed into a local minibus bound for Cidade Velha, the oldest European colonial settlement in the tropics and the former capital of Portuguese Cape Verde. From there, I set off on a rugged coastal hike, where I met an adventurous traveler from Estonia. The trail was steep, poorly marked, and often little more than a faint path along the cliffs, but together we found our way. It felt like the perfect ending to my time in Cabo Verde and an unforgettable start to a much larger journey across Africa.
