Kyrgyzstan

Kyrgyzstan quickly became one of my favorite countries in Central Asia. I based myself in the capital, Bishkek, a city whose wide boulevards, Soviet-era architecture, and sprawling public squares still reflect much of its Soviet past. From there, I took several trips into the surrounding mountains, where I quickly discovered why Kyrgyzstan has become such a popular destination for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts.

On a day trip outside Bishkek to the ancient Burana Tower, I met a Belgian traveler, Gaëtan, and his Moroccan girlfriend, Inaam. We decided to continue exploring the country together, heading into the Chon-Kemin Valley for a day of horseback riding through the mountains before sharing lunch with a local family in their home. It was one of those days that reminded me that some of the best travel experiences aren’t planned. They begin with a conversation between complete strangers.
