Maldives

While many visitors come to the Maldives for luxury resorts and private islands, I was traveling on a budget and wanted to experience how people actually lived, so I stayed on Maafushi, one of the country's inhabited local islands. I explored on foot, passing schools, homes, and even the local prison. One of the highlights of my stay was a day trip out on the water. The Maldives is home to some of the world’s most spectacular marine life. The coral reefs were full of colorful fish, and seeing reef sharks gliding through the water was a memorable experience.

Before leaving, I took a ferry to Malé, the country's densely populated capital. Unlike the picture-perfect resort islands that dominate travel brochures, Malé offered a glimpse into everyday Maldivian life. Walking through the markets and busy streets, I was struck by how deeply rooted Islam is in the country's culture, something most visitors probably never encounter during a typical resort stay.

Visiting both Maafushi and Malé gave me a much broader perspective on the Maldives. Beyond the overwater villas that make the country famous, I found a place with its own culture, traditions, and a fascinating rhythm of everyday life.
