Tajikistan

It was a two-hour drive from Tashkent, Uzbekistan, to the border with Tajikistan. While waiting in the immigration line, I met Behruz, a Tajik from a nearby border town who was excited to welcome a visitor to his homeland. After we crossed, he insisted on taking me to his family home, where his mother greeted me with fresh homemade bread. It was an unexpected act of generosity from someone I’d only met a few minutes earlier.

From there, I made my way to the ancient city of Khujand, one of Central Asia’s oldest settlements. Despite the intense summer heat, I spent hours wandering through its bustling bazaars, exploring the city’s monuments, and cooling off with fresh pomegranate juice. One of my favorite sights was watching enormous pots of plov, the region’s signature rice dish, being prepared for the lunchtime crowds. Tajikistan’s blend of Persian language and culture with its Soviet past, still reflected in its use of the Cyrillic alphabet, gave the country a fascinating identity all its own.
