Midway through my journey across South America, my Australian friend Alex and I arrived in Rio de Janeiro. I still remember being blown away by the city’s beauty and infectious energy. Dramatic mountains rose above golden beaches, and neighborhoods buzzed with life. We made our way up to Christ the Redeemer, where the panoramic view stretched across the city and the bay below. Standing beneath one of the world’s most recognizable landmarks, I finally understood why so many people consider Rio one of the most beautiful cities on Earth.

We also happened to be there during the Copa América. After buying tickets from a sketchy third-party seller in an alleyway, we picked up Peru jerseys, since Peru was our next destination, and joined thousands of fans cheering them on to a victory over Bolivia. Between the spectacular scenery, vibrant atmosphere, welcoming people, and unforgettable food, Brazil quickly became one of my favorite countries in the world.
