My Experience
After weeks of traveling through the chaos of mainland Africa, Comoros was a welcome change of pace. I actually arrived on Christmas Day, which felt a little ironic given that Comoros is a Muslim-majority country. This small island nation blends African, Arab, and French influences, giving it a culture unlike anywhere else I’d visited.
I spent my time wandering the streets of the capital, Moroni, where I was unexpectedly waved into a local wedding. The music, dancing, and colorful celebrations offered a glimpse into everyday life that no guidebook could. I also happily took advantage of the incredible seafood, enjoying freshly grilled octopus from a street vendor for just a couple of dollars while watching the sunset over the Indian Ocean. Comoros was a nice place for me to slow down and appreciate the rhythm of island life.
