My Experience
The Gambia marked my 150th country. Getting there was no small feat. My flight from Guinea-Bissau was delayed because of mechanical issues, and no one could tell us when it would depart. Rather than wait indefinitely, I left the airport and spent more than seven hours traveling overland, only to be subjected to an exhaustive search at the Gambian border before finally being allowed to enter. By the time I arrived, I certainly felt like I’d earned the milestone.
To celebrate, I made a large “150” sign on poster board and took it to the monkey park, where I managed to get a photo with a monkey perched on my shoulder. After that, I did some sightseeing around the capital and relaxed along the coast. For me, though, the most meaningful part of visiting The Gambia wasn’t what I saw. It was having the chance to pause and reflect on just how far I’d come in my journey.
