My Experience
During my gap year, I spent part of the year living in Boca Raton, Florida. While I was there, I became a regular at a small frozen yogurt shop near my apartment. The owner, Michele, was an Italian tennis fan, and we’d often spend hours talking. Before long, I also became friends with his wife, Mutheu, who was originally from Kenya. Whenever I saw her, she’d tell me stories about her home country and insist that I had to visit someday.
Eventually, as I started planning my first trip to Africa, I couldn’t stop thinking about those conversations, so I booked a flight to Nairobi. Mutheu introduced me to her sister, Anne, who welcomed me with incredible warmth and hospitality. She took me to feed giraffes, visit an elephant orphanage, and explore Nairobi’s vibrant neighborhoods. It’s amazing how a chance friendship over frozen yogurt led to one of the most memorable trips of my life.
