My Experience
When I crossed into Mozambique from Eswatini, a challenge awaited me. Border officials refused to let my guide’s car through because of a crack in the windshield. Their solution was simple: if we gave a couple of locals a ride to the capital, Maputo, we’d be allowed to continue. We agreed and left the border in the late afternoon with two new passengers, Kofi and Manuel.
Despite my Spanish and their Portuguese, we somehow managed to communicate. It amazed me how people from completely different backgrounds, speaking different languages, could still connect through curiosity, laughter, and a shared sense of adventure. By the time we arrived in Maputo, the sun had already set, but instead of heading home, Kofi and Manuel insisted on showing me around their city. We visited several of Maputo’s landmarks before enjoying an incredible seafood dinner along the coast. I was deeply grateful for their hospitality, and because of them, I left Mozambique with memories I’ll never forget.
