My Experience
Rwanda is one of the most remarkable examples of resilience I’ve ever seen. Nearly three decades after the 1994 genocide, Kigali felt clean, safe, and remarkably well organized. Many of the people I spoke with credited President Paul Kagame’s leadership with helping rebuild the country and restore stability after one of the darkest chapters in its history.
The moment that stayed with me most, though, was visiting the Kigali Genocide Memorial. I remember standing in the museum with tears streaming down my face as I read the stories of countless men, women, and children who were murdered simply because they were ethnically Tutsi. Later, I asked a local whether there was still tension between Hutu and Tutsi communities. She smiled and replied, “Nobody talks about that anymore. We’re all Rwandan.” It’s a conversation I’ll never forget, and a reminder that while humanity is capable of unimaginable cruelty, it’s also capable of extraordinary healing.
