My Experience
Iceland is one of the countries where I know my first visit didn’t do it justice. As someone who hates the cold, it was never going to be an easy destination. At the time, I was backpacking around Europe with nothing but flip-flops, so arriving in Iceland without proper shoes was, unsurprisingly, not ideal. Because of my tight budget and how expensive the country is, I wasn’t able to see nearly as much as I would have liked. I even booked a hotel near the airport to save money, only to discover that the short taxi ride there cost me 35 euros.
Despite that, I still managed to take a bus into Reykjavík, enjoying my first glimpse of Iceland’s volcanic landscapes along the way. After exploring the colorful capital, I met up with my college friend Ryan and his brother, who happened to be backpacking around Iceland at the same time. Together, we visited the Blue Lagoon, Iceland’s famous geothermal spa surrounded by black lava fields. Even with my limited time, I got a glimpse of why so many people fall in love with the country.
