My Experience
My first visit to the United Kingdom came during my gap year before college, when I traveled to London to cover the ATP Finals for a tennis magazine. Working alongside some of the biggest names in tennis journalism, I remember feeling both intimidated and excited to have that kind of access to the world’s best players. My budget, however, was considerably less glamorous. I stayed in a rather rough part of London and quickly learned that not every neighborhood looks like Buckingham Palace. As for the weather, the stereotype is true. It really is that gray.
Six years later, I returned to London to visit one of my closest friends from the University of Miami, also named Cameron, while he was completing his master’s degree. Although the weather and cost of living still weren’t exactly selling points, I came to appreciate London’s incredible international food scene. He took me to one of the world’s highest-rated Indian restaurants, and after waiting in a line that stretched down the block, I understood why. Traditional English food might not be my favorite, but London is home to some of the best restaurants anywhere in the world.
