My Experience
My Australian friend Alex and I traveled to Havana to support another friend of mine who was competing in a professional tennis tournament. From the drive out of the airport, it felt like stepping back in time, with colorful 1950s American cars still lining the streets.
Beneath the charm, though, I couldn’t help noticing how difficult life seemed for many people. Alex and I met a man on the street who told us he was an engineer, and we had a great conversation. Not long afterward, we saw him again working as a security guard on a street corner. When we said hello, he became emotional, almost as if he was embarrassed, explaining that he earned about $80 a month and could barely afford food. That conversation reinforced just how fortunate I am to have grown up in a country with so many opportunities. I left hoping that one day life becomes easier for the Cuban people.
