My Experience
One of my closest friends from my tennis academy in Florida, Manu from the Philippines, had just started college while I was on my gap year. Wanting to make sure our friendship stayed strong even as our lives moved in different directions, we decided to reunite in Punta Cana for a few days. As I would learn over years of travel, meaningful friendships don’t survive by accident. They take intention and effort.
After that trip, I knew I hadn’t properly experienced the Dominican Republic beyond its resorts. During my MBA, I returned after another close friend from tennis, Joaquín, moved to Santo Domingo with his family. We explored the historic streets of Santo Domingo, visited the sand dunes in the countryside, and enjoyed the city’s vibrant nightlife. It was a side of the Dominican Republic that many visitors never see, and one that left a much stronger impression on me.
