My Experience
Haiti was the last country I visited in the Caribbean. Because of the country’s volatile security situation and widespread gang violence, I didn’t feel comfortable spending much time in Port-au-Prince. After flying in, I continued on to Cap-Haïtien in the north, which was considered much safer.
There, I visited the Citadelle Laferrière and the nearby Sans-Souci Palace, two of the most impressive historical sites in the Caribbean. Even in Cap-Haïtien, where the security situation was far better than in the capital, the country’s challenges were impossible to ignore. Widespread poverty, unreliable infrastructure, and limited public services were evident everywhere. It was a sobering reminder of how profoundly the circumstances we’re born into can shape our lives.
