My Experience
Mexico has always felt close to home. Growing up just across the border in San Diego, I took Spanish throughout school, had many Mexican friends, and developed a love for Mexican food from an early age. My first visit to the country was to Mexico City, where I stayed with my tennis friend Santiago and his family in their home. Exploring the city with locals gave me a much more authentic experience than I would have had as a typical tourist.
In the years that followed, I traveled to more of Mexico. Honestly, tourist destinations like Cancún didn’t resonate with me as much as I’d hoped, and Chichén Itzá felt like a victim of overtourism. But what has always stood out to me about Mexico isn’t the places. It’s the people. Everywhere I’ve been, I’ve been met with warmth, generosity, and a deep sense of family and community.
