43. Nicaragua (November 26, 2019)
Nicaragua is perhaps my favorite country in Central America. While nearby Costa Rica and Panama attract far more international visitors, I found Nicaragua to be the most beautiful of the three. It’s also significantly more affordable, which was a huge advantage when I visited as a college student traveling on a tight budget. I began my trip in the capital, Managua, before continuing to the colorful colonial city of Granada. From there, I took a small boat through the picturesque islets scattered across Lake Nicaragua.
One of my favorite moments came at Masaya Volcano, where I stood on the rim of the crater, watching glowing lava churn deep below before tossing a rock into it. I finished my trip at Laguna de Apoyo, spending the morning paddleboarding across calm, mist-covered water with hardly another person in sight. Nicaragua has so much to offer, and I hope its reputation continues to improve because it deserves far more recognition than it receives.
