Saint Kitts and Nevis

My trip to St. Kitts and Nevis was made possible in part by my friend Bryce, an American Airlines pilot I had met in Guyana, who got me a buddy pass when flights were astronomically expensive. On my first night, I arrived in heavy rain and was walking through town when two locals, Nick and Brian, pulled over to see if I needed a ride. In the back of their truck was a goat. Curious, I asked about it, and they explained they had just bought it and were taking it back to their farm. As random as it sounds, we ended up grabbing drinks together later that night. It was a memorable introduction to the island.

The next day, I took a ferry to Nevis, St. Kitts’ peaceful sister island, small enough to drive around in about an hour, before returning to St. Kitts. The following morning, I hiked Mount Liamuiga with a local guide whose pace was relentless. After years of playing competitive tennis, I considered myself to be in pretty good shape, but by the time we reached the summit, I was completely out of breath. It was exactly the kind of spontaneous island adventure I’d hoped for.
